When faced with a stressful situation, we all react differently. When stressed, many of us will experience symptoms of anxiety that include fear and nervousness until the situation passes. When these symptoms persist and interfere with daily life, the person may have an anxiety disorder. Outpatient mental health providers can treat anxiety disorder and help manage its symptoms.

As telepsychiatry providers, we will discuss the types of anxiety disorders:

  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
OCD is characterized by unwanted, recurrent thought patterns and repetitive behaviors. People with OCD perform repetitive behaviors to prevent obsessive thoughts. When these “rituals” are not performed, they can cause anxiety.
  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder
GAD is characterized by excessive worrying and chronic anxiety. This takes form in rumination where a person with GAD spends a lot of time overthinking different events both in the past and future.
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
PTSD is another anxiety disorder that typically develops after exposure to a traumatic event. Examples of such events include personal assaults, natural or human-caused disasters, accidents, and military combat.
  • Social Anxiety Disorder
SAD is characterized by overwhelming anxiety in social situations. A person with SAD may be excessively self-conscious and find it difficult to speak in formal or informal situations.
  • Panic Disorder
This disorder is characterized by repeated and unexpected episodes of intense fear. This is usually accompanied by physical symptoms like dizziness, chest pain, and dizziness.
